Safety Training: Keys to Success and Safety in Mining

pelatihan keselamatan di dunia pertambangan

The mining industry is a sector filled with challenges and high risks. Work involving heavy machinery, chemicals and remote job locations exposes mining workers to various potential hazards, ranging from workplace accidents to long-term health risks.

For this reason, safety training is essential to ensure the well-being of workers and the sustainability of mining operations.

Why is Safety Training Important?

Safety training is a proactive effort to reduce the risk of accidents in the workplace. In the mining context, it not only helps workers understand how to work safely, but also increases their awareness of hazards that could arise at any time.

Here are the reasons why safety training is so important.

1. Protecting workers lives

Workplace accident data shows that many incidents in the mining sector are caused by workers’ lack of understanding of safety procedures. Safety training provides knowledge on how to identify hazards and risks, operate heavy machinery, evacuation procedures during emergencies, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety tools.

2. Preventing financial losses

Workplace accidents harm not only workers but also companies. Medical expenses, equipment repairs, and fines for safety violations can impose significant financial burdens. By raising employee awareness through safety training, companies can significantly reduce the potential for these losses.

3. Boosting productivity

A safe work environment makes workers feel secure, calm, and focused. This contributes to increased productivity, as employees can perform their tasks without fear or anxiety about potential accidents.

4. Increases Hazard Awareness

Safety training also increases workers’ awareness of potential hazards in the workplace. Trained employees can identify and assess risks more effectively, enabling them to take the appropriate preventing measures. This awareness is important to help employees avoid accidents that can occur due to negligence or lack of knowledge.

5. Complying with legal regulations

The Indonesian government mandates mining companies to implement occupational safety management system in accordance with UUD No. 1 of 1970 about workplace safety, specifically Chapter 5 on training. This law requires companies to train all employees so they can understand potential hazards, safety equipment, protective measures, and safe work practices. Safety training is one way for companies to comply with these regulations.

Types of Safety Training in the Mining Industry

Safety training in the mining sector must be specifically designed to align with the competencies, needs, and potential hazards in the field. Some types of training that are commonly applied include:

1. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) Training

Mining workers must be able to identify hazards in their work environment and during activities to determine appropriate control measures, ranging from elimination and substitution to the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). This training aims to manage and reduce the risk of incidents effectively.

2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Training

Mining workers must understand the importance of using PPE such as helmets, safety boots, masks, and protective googles. This training covers how to select suitable PPE, proper maintenance, and correct and effective usage to ensure maximum safety.

3. Handling Hazardous and Toxic Materials (HTM)

HTM is commonly used in mining processes, including oil, diesel, grease, and acid water. This training provides knowledge about identifying chemicals, understanding associated hazards, safe storage and handling methods, proper disposal practices, and emergency response actions when exposed to such materials.

4. Emergency Evacuation Simulation

In emergency situations such as accidents, floods, fires, or landslides, speed and accuracy in response and evacuation are critical. This training helps workers understand evacuation routes, assembly points, and other rescue procedures to ensure safety during emergencies.

5. Heavy Equipment Operation Training

Operating heavy machinery such as excavators, dump trucks, or drilling equipment requires specific qualifications and skills. This training ensures workers possess the necessary competencies, including skills, knowledge, and attitudes, to operate the equipment safely and efficiently.

Company Steps to Improve Safety Training

To make safety training more effective, mining companies should adopt strategic measures, such as:

1. Identifying Training Needs

Conduct an evaluation of the workforce’s current skills in comparison to the company’s requirements to align with the organization’s vision, mission, and strategic goals.

2. Designing an Appropriate Training Program

Choose the format (offline, online, hybrid) based on the type of training and target audience. Focus on practical and relevant materials tailored to daily work activities. Employ competent internal or external facilitators to deliver the training effectively.

3. Involving Safety Experts

Safety training should be conducted by experienced and certified instructors specializing in occupational safety and health.

4. Budgeting and Resource Allocation

The company must allocate a budget covering trainer fees, training aids, venues, and other necessary resources. This includes providing facilities such as training rooms, technology devices, or practice tools to support the training process.

5. Training Implementation

Companies should schedule training sessions at times that do not disrupt operational activities. The training process should utilize interactive methods, such as simulations, case studies, and group discussions, while also monitoring participant attendance and engagement.

6. Evaluation and Feedback

After the training concludes, participants should provide feedback on the content, facilitators, and the training’s benefits. The company is also expected to conduct competency tests or simulations to ensure that workers fully understand the material delivered.
